Welcome to another episode of Warbird Wednesday! Today, we’re delving into the history of the Martin PBM Mariner, an amphibious flying boat designed in 1939 and officially introduced in 1940. Throughout World War II, the Mariner served essential roles in anti-submarine search, patrol, and search & rescue missions, equipped with advanced radar and magnetometers. Its remarkable service spanned until 1964, with production occurring from 1940 to 1949, resulting in a total of 1,366 units built. The aircraft played a pivotal role in safeguarding convoys during the Battle of the Atlantic, successfully sinking 10 German submarines. Post-war, it found new life in various Navies, being utilized for diverse purposes, including troop and cargo transport.
