KAL flight 007 was scheduled to fly from New York City to Seoul via Anchorage, Alaska. On 1 September 1983 however, the Boeing 747 airliner serving the flight was blown out of the sky by a Soviet Su-15 interceptor. The Soviet Union initially denied knowledge of the incident, but later admitted shooting down the aircraft, claiming that it was on a spy mission. Our speaker was a 20 year old United States Marine intercept operator with a front seat on the USS Sterett to the incident.
