But that didn’t stop émigré filmmakers from war-torn Europe like Alfred Hitchcock, Jean Renoir, Ernst Lubitsch and Fritz Lang from working pro-interventionist messages into their entertainment packages – and in the process making some of the best films of the Golden Era.
