On October 20, 1944, General Douglas MacArthur watched the Sixth Army storm ashore on the Philippine island of Leyte. Meanwhile Admiral Soemu Toyoda, commander of Japan’s Combined Fleet, had deployed it into three separate naval forces to engage and crush the U.S. army and navy units mounting this invasion. This is the story of one of the largest and most decisive naval battles in military history. At its conclusion, the Japanese Combined Fleet was so badly mauled that it never again engaged U.S. armed services as an integrated fighting force.
