Between 1939 and 1945 more than 575 different types of military aircraft were developed by the combatant nations. Not nearly that many became household names like the Mustang, Zero or Spitfire. This is a look at the lesser known winners, losers and wild aircraft designs that were thought up during WWII. We’ll discuss the rocket and jet planes for both Allied and Axis countries and talk about why America was so successful in the aviation development race.
